Laughter Yoga

Experience the healing power of laughter through movement, breathwork, and joy. A playful practice to reduce stress, boost energy, and reconnect with yourself.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a unique wellbeing practice that combines playful laughter exercises, deep yogic breathing, and gentle movement. It was developed in the 1990s by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from India, who recognised the powerful link between laughter and improved health.

Unlike comedy or humour-based laughter, Laughter Yoga works on the principle that the body doesn’t know the difference between real and simulated laughter. When we laugh, even if we “fake it” at first, the body still releases endorphins (our natural feel-good chemicals), reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), and boosts circulation and oxygen levels. Over time, simulated laughter often becomes genuine, especially in a group setting where connection and joy are contagious.

Benefits of Laughter Yoga

Research and practice show that Laughter Yoga can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels.
  • Boost mood and energy, leaving participants feeling lighter and more positive.
  • Strengthen the immune system by encouraging deep breathing and oxygen flow.
  • Improve social connection through shared laughter, which builds trust and bonds quickly.
  • Encourage playfulness and creativity, helping people loosen rigid thinking patterns.

What to Expect in a Session

A typical session can last between 60 – 90 minutes and include:

01/04

Gentle warm-up movements and breathing exercises.

02/04

Laughter exercises (e.g., greeting laughter, clapping rhythms, playful role-play).

03/04

Breathing techniques drawn from yoga.

04/04

Short relaxation or meditation to close the session and allow the body to integrate the experience.

No yoga mats or special clothes are required, just comfortable attire and an open mind.

Why It Works

As Dr. Kataria explains:

When you laugh, you change. And when you change, the whole world changes around you.

From Clarus’ perspective, Laughter Yoga is not about ignoring life’s challenges. Instead, it’s about creating purposeful moments of release and joy, helping the body reset and giving people a powerful tool to manage stress in healthier ways.
